BookBurn Cafe & Social
What is a soul session?
Simply put…it’s a film screening but diving deeper. The evening centers a queer Black story and invites you into a night of film, R&B, reflection, and honest conversation.
Come for the film but stay for the soul.
THE FLOW
An R&B Vibe
A live R&B DJ set brings you into the night with the kind of music that settles in and touches the soul.
Break the Ice
Games and conversation starters help you connect, loosen up, and step into the questions behind the film.
We Watch STEPS
Experience the award-winning short film following a queer Black man whose present is tested when his past unexpectedly returns. See more below
See How It Came Together
Go behind the scenes with footage that gives you a closer look at the making of the film and the heart behind it.
The SOUL TALK
The story moves beyond the screen as we dig into how our past shapes us and ask:
Would you help the person who once hurt you?
Stay for the Vibes
We’ll close with giveaways, more R&B, and time to connect inside BookBurn, a proudly queer-run café and social space in Orlando.
A Steven Lamar Short Film
Film Synopsis
On his way to a dinner date, Braven, a queer Black man, is pulled into an unexpected confrontation with the past he thought he had left behind. As old wounds resurface, he must decide whether protecting his peace means walking away or facing what still has a hold on him.
About the screening
Filmed in Orlando by filmmaker Steven Lamar, STEPS has traveled from Las Vegas to Atlanta, connecting with audiences through its story of identity, boundaries, and the past we carry. Now, the film comes home for a special evening created for Orlando’s queer community and beyond.
